This Friday marks the start of summer, and it’s another week packed full of things to do. From the Midsommar Celebration and Mermaid Parades that we all know about, to art shows and live music that we might not, take your pick at activity. I am going to highlight one event that is my choice for Saturday, though, not only because she’s a friend, but because her art is really fantastic. So if you happen yourself in or around Chinatown/LES/Lower Manhattan on Saturday between 5 and 7PM, take a walk on over to Galarie Shibumi to see Ira Oksman’s debut solo art show (see above for images of Ira, her work, and her scent-creator, Rose). Her paintings focus on the actions and attitudes of Satan Mare and the world she exists in, perhaps a fantastical representation of the tough, idgaf persona so many of us wish we actually espoused. Ira promises a sensory and interactive element to the show opening as well (the previously mentioned scent! 3D objects! Artist-viewer interactions!). Like many exhibitions, this show is the culmination of many months and days of hard, dedicated work (being an artist is not easy), and Galarie Shibumi is a lovely and welcoming space. If you happen to see me there at the same time as you, come up and say hi.
And remember: if you are involved in an event (music, art, theatre, books, etc etc), or think that an event you’re attending is something that should be listed here, please submit it to me via my calendar form submission. It’s easy, it’s quick, and it helps me so much to keep the content full and interesting.
